Potty Training: HELP!

Yes, that is yours truly in the potty training chair.  I don't know where this was taken but obviously somebody wasn't too happy about it!  Judging from the shag carpet and the rock wall behind me it was a looooooong time ago and now I feel old.

So the time has come and we've been talking about the issue of "potty training".  Honestly I think this scares me more than Connor.  First time parent nerves I guess.  He has used the potty several times.  It's just not consistent.

Do ya'll have any potty training tips or advice you would like to give this Mama that helped you out?

I know everyone says it will happen when they are ready, but he seems genuinely interesting in using the potty right now so we thought why not?  He also spends all day with his cousin Ellie who is already potty trained.  He sees her using the potty and knows she doesn't wear diapers, so he's already exposed to "this is what you do when you use the potty" type things.

I would never push him....that is not my goal here.  I'm just saying if he's taken interest then why not try?  And lets face it.....not buying diapers anymore would be awesome too :-)

Go for it! As soon as mine showed any interest I jumped on it and they both potty trained well. Just take him every thirty minutes and give him a reward when he goes! You can do it mama!

If you truly think that he is ready then my advice to you is once you decide to start, commit 100%. Potty training is harder for the parent than it is for the child. You are the one who basically needs to train yourself to keep with it.
I wish you the best of luck and know that it will happen!!!

My motivation was that I didn't want a 2.5 year old (at the time) and a newborn both in diapers. So, I completely gave up the diapers/pull-ups and went straight to underwear 24/7. Yes, there were accidents but I feel that they were minimal considering what every one told me. I also used the three day potty training manual and think it helped. Of course it takes longer than three days, but you make a ton of progress in those three days. Alot of people advised me not to potty train boys until they are 3. Not true. Let me know if you want a copy of that three day potty training PDF!

Oh girl, I was just as nervous about the whole thing. I dreaded it too, but thankfully Tommy got the hang of it in about two weeks.

I threw a potty-party. The Saturday he woke up, I had decorated the bathroom with balloons and streamers and cool boy underwear. I made these little papers I stuck to the wall that he could put stickers on any time he went. And he was rewarded with one M&M for a number one and two M&M's for a number two. (o:

It was a bit exhausting, but we got through it. THe key really is consistency - once you start, don't go back.

And hang in there, it will be a rough ride the first few days!

If he's interested and leading the way, you should do it. We tried with Sam back in May and he just wasn't ready. We're going to try again in the next month or two since he's closer to three now and I told myself I'd let him be more ready so we'll have less accidents :)
It's definitely harder on me as the parent than him, as I got so frustrated, so once you commit, keep with it! He'll do great!

My best advice from potty training a boy is get a step stool and let him stand up at the big potty! I know most will think he is too young but when I did this for my Connor he got the hang of it super quick! I think it was because he had seen Daddy go potty like that and it just clicked! Also, get Terrence involved! Nothing is harder than a girl trying to potty train a boy!

I know you will be super patient but it truly is the key to good & easy potty training! My Connor was almost 3 before he was trained but I believe waiting until then helped us out in the time frame it took (literally 1 week trained for both day & night!)

Oh and go straight for the big boy undies! Pull-up are just diapers that you "Pull-Up"!!!!!

Good Luck!

I was wreck about potty training. I have friends who wanted there kids potty trained by a certain age so it took 6-1year with LOTS of accidents I did not have that kind of time, nor am I that person. I again with wait til they are ready. S was pretty easy once we decided.

Just dont get frustrated if he slips and becomes not insterested. S did this twice before he was really ready.

I waited till well after Brayden showed definitive interest in it, but that was probably more to do with (a) my nerves about the whole thing and (b) I had a newborn. We waited until right before he turned 3. He potty trained in about 2 weeks. Consistency is KEY. And I gave rewards (1 m&m for pee, 2 for poop). Honestly, if he's ready, it won't be hard. So if you start trying and you're the one more potty trained than he is, then I would say stop and try again in a few months. That's what happened with us and it was the best thing I could have ever done!

Totally go for it! It took my son a long time to finally be fully potted trained (a little after 3) but once he did it there was no turning back. For us we started small, keeping a jar of m&m's in the bathroom (with a lid of course!) and giving him a few every time he tried or wanted to sit. Once we started to see small progress my husband bought about 10 hot wheels and we taped the packages above the toilet. Then once he actually peed he could choose a car, we slowing increase what he had to do to peeing all day, or pooping, etc. Needless to say he had quite a collection once he was done. But it was a cheap treat and really made him want to potty train. Good luck!!

You can do it! Go for it! I wrote a post about my potty training experience with Graeme because I was so floored at how quickly it went. I felt like a nerd writing it out, but hoped that it would be an encouragement to someone. I have no idea if my other little guy will be as easy to train-- I know it does depend a bit on their little personality-- but Graeme passed the potty training class with flying colors : ) Here's the post, if you have about 5 minutes to read through it.

I have absolutely no advice but I'd say if he seems interested go for it!

My 2 yr old (will be 3 in Nov) just potty trained himself last week. He started going to the bathroom or the front porch ;) and stayed dry for several days and NIGHTS in a row so we put underware on. He is my second boy, my first did pretty much the same thing on his 3rd bday. I am totally in the camp of not pushing, it will happen.

The only advice I can give is to just ask him frequently if he needs to use the potty. Eventually he will get used to going and will not like the way a wet diaper feels. It's also great that he is with another child everyday that is using the potty.

Boyd potty trained at 3 1/2 years, he got the pee part down in about a week. Star charts, which sound so silly and simple to me worked like a MIRACLE. He was so proud to get a star each time. It took us 7 more months to get the poop part down. I was stressed. DON'T stress! :) It is SO TRUE....they will do it when they are ready. One day he just did it and I did a lot of praying and crying along the way. Looking back I wish I would have been more relaxed. We praised him a lot and talked about it a lot, told him about his friends and cousins that all did it, and it just finally clicked, overnight, and in a million years I would have said he will never get it. But they do. :))

ps. I know we were very late in potty training. My goal was to have it done before he began his one year of Pre-K, so I didn't try to set a time limit/certain age that was too young. Every kid is so different though! :)
